Survey: Money no longer top priority in career choice

JobStreet survey shows that many Malaysians are choosing career development opportunities over salary.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians appear to be prioritising career development opportunities over monetary compensation in their decisions about where they want to work, according to a recent survey by online employment company JobStreet.com.
According to the JobStreet.com Top 10 Companies 2017 survey which involved 10,241 Malaysians across all position levels, the number one company that Malaysians aspire to work for is Google Malaysia.
This is followed by Petronas, Shell Malaysia, Sime Darby, AirAsia Berhad, Maybank, Nestle Malaysia, Intel Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Eco World Development Group Berhad.
When asked for the main reasons they wanted to work with these companies, participants cited career development opportunities, followed by benefits and incentives.

Although salary remained an important consideration, it took third place behind the first two reasons.
Working environment came fourth, followed by company reputation.
In a statement on the company’s website, country manager of JobStreet.com Malaysia, Chook Yuh Yng, said financial benefits or incentives were no longer sufficient to attract talents.
“Today, companies need to compete for talents through strategic and unique approaches that differentiate themselves from competitors.”
JobStreet’s survey was conducted from March to April 2017. Candidates ranged from 18 to 50 years old, with the majority of them between 26 and 33.
