Govt to consider allowing scholars to use bursaries to study abroad

PETALING JAYA: The Government will consider allowing SPM 2014 top students to use their local scholarships to study abroad, following a request by 2015 bursary recipients, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon.

This came after the MCA Youth chief paid a visit to the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa to discuss the matter.

In a statement yesterday, MCA Youth education bureau chairman Lim Ching Hao, who accompanied Chong during the visit, said Dr Ali Hamsa had indicated that the Government “would consider the matter” and announce the decision and details in the near future.

“This year, MCA Youth again received a request from 119 bursary recipients of 2015, to help them obtain the greenlight from the Government for them to study at renowned universities abroad.

“They are the last batch of students affected by the Government’s decision to cease sponsoring bursary recipients for studies overseas,” he said.

Lim said MCA Youth had assisted 144 bursary recipients last year in their application to use the amount of their local scholarships for overseas studies.

“Among them, nine students who received admission into the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and other Ivy League colleges and universities also received 80% special sponsorship in fees and allowances,” he added.

Lim said MCA Youth once again appealed for the Government to use the same mechanism to allow the other recipients to use their local scholarships to study at renowned universities overseas, with the shortfall borne by the students themselves.
