The campaign pushed off in high spirits and contagious camaraderie at the southernmost state in the peninsular of Malaysia – Johor, with an increasing number of bank employees realizing the importance of the union to their livelihood.
The event saw close to 30 Branch Committee members and Working Committee members gearing up a solidarity campaign that will spread across the southern region.
NUBE President, Bro Tan Eng Hong was present to launch the nationwide campaign at his home state where he is also SMJ Branch Secretary. He was accompanied by NUBE Vice President, Bro Chee Yeeh Ceeu and SMJ Chairman, Bro Kamarudin Bujang.
Bro Tan Eng Hong, in his solidarity speech explained that strong and responsible unions were essential to industrial fair play and without them, the labour bargain was wholly one sided, benefiting the employers.
He said with the emerging trend of automation in the banking industry, bank workers have to be informed of their rights; and the only way a bank worker can defend oneself against the aggressive power of the evolving industry is to be a member of NUBE, and through the Union, deal and face challenges.
Meanwhile, Bro Chee stressed that there was a critical need for awareness among bank workers of their rights at work in order to achieve a shift in equality in the workplace.
He added that in every campaign, members involvement was crucial to achieving Union goals and nothing was more effective than face-to-face communication with members.
So, look out as the Solidarity Campaign spirit permeates the peninsular with a message of unity among the working-class Malaysians in the banking industry.
